Firstly I would like to thank the Society for the invitation to judge their Breed Open Show, their hospitality was lovely, and the gift is beautiful. And of course my two efficient stewards on the day. Secondly I wish to thank the exhibitors that bought their dogs under me, I truly appreciate it, and was genuinely spoilt for choice in several classes.
Overall the quality across both dogs and bitches was excellent, the last few times I have judged our breed I was concerned for the very upright front pasterns evident in many, soft coats, and lack of bone. Today im pleased to say that these traits were very few and far between, I found one level bite and a few moving very wide behind. Temperaments were, as ever, excellent.
Class 1. Minor Puppy Bitch, 5.
A close decision between the first two but a lovely class of babies!
1st Mann - Valger Tiggywinkle, this young girl caught my eye immediately, looking quite mature for her 8 months. I loved her moderation throughout. Her head is typy, clean and feminine, already with good eye colour. A clean, moderately long neck into well positioned shoulders, front pasterns slightly sloping and compact feet. She is short through her back and her rear construction is good with a nice turn of stifle and strong hocks. Lovely coat. She was a little unsettled at times but she still moved out with that true workmanlike stride, wasting nothing but eating up the ground. Delighted to award her BPIS
2nd Peebles - Seasham Too Much Heaven, many of the same qualities and attributes as 1, she is also well proportioned and well constructed throughout, I had to be quite picky here and simply preferred the head of the class winner. But taking nothing away from this young girl, she is very smart and should have a bright future.
3rd Taylor - Valger Tamara
Class 2. Puppy Bitch, 3.
1st Wilson – Seasham How Deep Is Your Love, I see she is litter sister to 2nd place in MPB class, slightly taller than her sister, and looking a little more mature, however she is also very well put together from head to tail, her angles are correct, back short and has a good depth of chest, hopefully her pasterns will slope slightly more as she matures, she moved extremely well.
2nd Smillie-Gray & Gray – Pelenrise Blow Me A Kiss From Oakberrow, another promising youngster, a little rangier than the winner, she has a cracking head and clean neck. She is also a little upright in her pasterns at this time. Still to drop through the chest. She is well angulated behind with strong hocks. Moved well.
3rd Staley – Jomeel Pink Fizz
Class 3. Junior Bitch, 2.
Tough class, both bitches very well constructed.
1st Elrington – Tequesta Happy Valley, lovely bitch who is well put together, lovely head, to darken in eye a little yet. Well proportioned in length and height, lovely depth through chest, ribbed well back. Excellent turn of stifle with hocks strong and well set. Good feet. Excellent coarse coat. Tail set on and carried well. Driving rear movement won her this class today.
2nd Ellis – Soellis Feral Beryl, very similar remarks apply, I actually prefer the head of this bitch, lovely dark eye, cleanly constructed throughout, another correct coarse coat, im sure these two will enjoy swapping places throughout their showing days.
Class 4. Novice Bitch, 2.
1st Tequesta Happy Valley.
2nd Key - Montalba Mrs Whitlow, a sweet bitch, nice head, good length of neck, moderately arched. Depth of chest is good, short backed with a strong loin, well constructed rear end, a little upright through the shoulder and front pastern.
Class 5. Post Grad Bitch, 4.
1st Angus – Keigame Hearts Desire Of Sparkenhoe (AI) JW, a lovely bitch that caught my eye, beautiful ‘old fashioned head’, lovely dark eye, neck a tad shorter than id like. Angles front and rear are good, feet excellent, tail set and carried well on the move, feet tight, and very best of coats, moved out so very soundly winning her the class. Pleased to award her RBB in a strong lineup.
2nd Edlin – Graygees Tsarine, bitch of moderation, lovely head with dark eye, again angles are good, great depth of chest, coat a litter softer than id like, moved okay.
3rd Russell – Fraulynzway Hayleys Comet
Class 6. Limit Bitch, 9(1).
Tough class full of quality, wished i had half a dozen first place cards.
1st Taylor & Taylor-Morris - Drysika Cha Cha At Pelenrise, loved her moderation, she has a lovely head with good expression, neck of correct length, strong and moderately arched, front construction is good, clean through her legs, nicely slopped pasterns into good feet. Chest is deep and ribs come well back. Topline is strong and held well on the move, well angulated behind. Soundest movement in the class securing her win today.
2nd Whitehouse – Kazanpaul Prawn Cracker, liked her head with a dark eye and kind, sweet expression, good clean neck, a little less angulation through the shoulder and upper arm than the class winner, but legs were clean and feet excellent. Lovely depth of chest and strong topline, well held. Hind angulation good, with strong hocks. Again a sound mover, scoring for her today
3rd Staley – Jomeel Now Im Here
Class 7. Open Bitch, 6.
Loved the top three in this class.
1st Pearson – Sh Ch Winterwell Lulu Moppet To Ladyhawke JW, couldn’t look past this bitch today, she is what I feel defines the moderation called for in this breed, nothing is over done, she has a beautiful, clean head, expressive eyes which are lovely and dark. Viewed front on she has excellent clean front legs with the tightest of feet, her neck is moderately long, strong, and correctly arched, her shoulder placement is spot on, well angulated. Depth of chest good with ribs carried well back to her tuckup. Strong topline which she held well on the move, with moderate angulation through her rear end. Good coat, superb movement. Really pleased to eventually award her BB, BOS, RBIS.
2nd Cooke & Hammond – Sh Ch Seasham I Love To Boogie, also a beautifully balanced bitch of moderation. All angles are correct, not over done, sweet head with dark eye, nice reach of neck and good depth of chest. Feet are tight. Back is short with a correct tail set. Moved out very soundly indeed.
3rd Cox – Cushatlaw Serendipity JW
Class 8. Special Working Gundog Bitch, 2.
1st Nixon – Ch Quintana Lunar Eclipse. 4th in the above Open Bitch class, unfortunate to meet stiff competition there! A nice bitch who I have admired previously. Moderately angulated behind, a little upright through the forearm. Sweet head and has a clean neck, short back and good depth. She lacked a bit of enthusiasm on the move today.
2nd Nixon – Ft Ch Quintana Cloud Berry, an 8 year old flashy girl. She is a bit rangier than the winner, with less depth through her chest and ribs. However her angles behind are super, with strong hocks, lovely tight feet all round, topline is strong, moved well.
Class 9. Field Trial Bitch, 2.
1st Nixon – Ch Quintana Lunar Eclipse
2nd Nixon – Ft Ch Quintana Cloud Berry
Class 10. Veteran Bitch, 4(1).
1st Lockett – Fayemm Remember Me. Another 8 year old girl. This bitch has a lovely head, with good eye colour, correct dentition, clean through her neck, down into shoulders that are well angulated. Feet could be tighter. A good depth of chest, ribbed well back. Rear angles are good, with well set hocks, still maintaining strength. Moved out very well. BVIS
2nd Elliot – Int/Ndl/Ger Gamebourne Enchanted With Ankerwycke, 10 year old bitch who could pass for far younger! Lovely feminine head and dark eye. Neck strong and slightly arched. Correct angles all round. Feet and coat are good. Just loosing out on the move today to the winner.
3rd Nixon – Ft Ch Quintana Cloud Berry
Class 11. Minor Puppy Dog, 4.
1st Webster – Jomeel Pulp Fiction. Taller dog than the 2nd placed dog, but his angles all round are correct, enough depth through chest and back to ribs, strong topline which he held well. He has a masculine head but still with that puppy expression, needs to darken in eye. His movement was foot perfect (once he settled) and this was ultimately what secured his win.
2nd Cooke & Hammond – Seasham Jingle Jangle. Initially thought this appealing lad was the class winner, on the stack he presents a beautiful, clean outine, a lovely size, he has a lovely head and good eye, sufficient depth through his chest at this young age, very clean legs and feet, rear angles are good with strong, well set hocks. Today he was moving a tad wide behind which cost him the win.
3rd Edlin – Mistcapel Storm Shadow.
Class 12. Puppy Dog, 3.
1st Daws – Pelenrise Blow a Gasket. Sweet young lad who has a lovely head, strong neck well set on, he is short backed, has a lovely depth through his chest, he has just enough angulation all round, lovely pasterns and feet. Coat is good, today winning this class on movement, outstripping the winner of MPD.
2nd Webster – Jomeel Pulp Fiction, winner of previous class.
3rd Bunker – Mistcapel Blowin the Breeze.
Class 13. Junior Dog, 3 (1).
1st Adams – Tequesta Poldark JW. I note this dog is litter brother to JB winner and I must say the same critique applies to this lad, his slightly ‘old fashioned’ look appealed to me, very workman like. He is of correct size, with a short back, moderate angles all round, decent depth through his chest, well ribbed and a good tuck-up, good width through the loins. Lovely tight feet, harsh coat, and a pleasure to watch on the move, pleased to award him RBD.
2nd Daws – Pelenrise Blow a Gasket, winner of previous class.
Class 14. Novice Dog, 2.
1st Barton – Kavacanne Wild Berry Waffle, presents a decent outline in side profile, a tad taller than some, correct angles all round, lovely clean forelegs and super feet. Appealing head with nice eye. Good coat. Well presented by his handler, moved out well.
2nd Fowler – Madcap Medlar. Lovely head on this lad, correct length of neck, short through the back, he has a decent depth of chest and is a better height than class winner, also well angulated all round. However he was very tense today, giving his handler a hard time, tending to stack roached through his back, he can relax and drop this as he did so at times on the move, just needs some work and patience to see him at his best.
Class 15. Post Graduate Dog, 3.
1st Heath & Robinson – Pinseeker Pep Guardiola JW. If there was a dog I could have taken home with me, this would have been the one, absolutely loved him. Two years old and starting to look the finished picture, he is masculine but not coarse, he has a beautiful head, strong enough to show he is a male with lovely detailing. Super length of neck which is strong and slightly arched, set onto a front end that is so soundly constructed, correct slope through the shoulder and elbows laid nicely back. Short and strong through the back, depth of chest is correct, ribbed well back to strong, wide loins. Tail well set and carried. Rear angulation is spot on, hocks strong and tight footed. He moved with real purpose powering round the ring but without any exaggeration or wasted energy. Delighted to award him BD and BIS. Doubt this dogs title will be far away.
2nd Russel – Fraulynzway Lightening Bolt JW. Unfortunate to meet the class winner today, as he is also a nice lad. Taller than 1, but balanced all round. A masculine head with dark eye. Not quite as well angled through the front assembly but still enough. Also short and strong backed. Rear end well angulated, tightest of feet. Moved okay.
3rd Fowler – Madcap Medlar.
Class 16. Limit Dog, 6 (1).
1st Mellor – Evagrove Exclusive. Medium sized, compact dog. Good head with a dark eye. Strong neck and very well constructed front end, lovely sloping shoulder and good length of upper arm, well laid back elbows. Depth of chest decent, lovely short back with strong topline held on the move, and good width through the loin, rear construction is sound, strong hocks. Front limbs are clean with lovely pasterns and the tightest of feet. Moved cleanly.
2nd Serpa & Graham – Winterwell Tubby Tompkin From Nyliram. Another nicely compact dog, plenty of bone and well muscled. Short back, well angulated all round. Strong rear construction with well set hocks. Would like to see elbows held closer to the body. Moved soundly.
3rd Taylor & Taylor-Morris – Pelenrise All Guns Blazing JW.
Class 17. Open Dog, 5 (2)
1st Bowler – Sh Ch Winterwell Iggy Inch JW. Dog of medium size with enough bone. Short backed with good angles all round, correctly sloped front pasterns, depth of chest good, feet tight. Lovely head with correct dark eye. Harsh coat. Moved very well indeed.
2nd Peebles & Hammond – Seasham The Groover. Taller, rangier dog than the winner. Lovely head with good length of neck. Nice topline held well on the move. Well angulated behind with tight feet. Correct tail set and carriage. Handled impeccably!
3rd Marsh – Kilnrae Berliner.
Class 18. Special Working Gundog Dog, 0
Class 19. Field Trial Dog, 1(1).
Class 20. Veteran Dog, 2(2).
